Steve Letarte is a race-winning NASCAR crew chief, broadcast analyst, entrepreneur, and author whose career spans every level of the sport.
During his decade long career as a crew chief in NASCAR’s premier series, Letarte earned 15 victories, including a win in the sport’s most prestigious event—the Daytona 500. His racing journey began at just 16 years old at Hendrick Motorsports, where he worked his way through the organization before becoming a crew chief at age 25, one of the youngest in NASCAR history.
Known as a dynamic and strategic leader, Letarte served as crew chief for two of NASCAR’s most iconic drivers: four-time Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon and fifteen-time Most Popular Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.
After stepping down from the pit box following the 2014 season, Letarte transitioned into broadcasting and joined NBC Sports as a motorsports analyst. Today, he provides live race analysis across NBC, USA Network, TNT Sports, and Amazon Prime Video, delivering insight from a crew chief’s perspective to fans across multiple platforms.
In addition to his broadcast work, Letarte serves as executive producer and featured analyst for NASCAR Inside the Race with NASCAR Digital Media. He played a key role in creating the post-race show and its weekly content, breaking down race strategy, pit stops, and the technical decisions that determine how races are truly won. Letarte further diversified his media footprint by contributing to Netflix’s documentary series NASCAR: Full Speed, appearing in both Season 1 and Season 2. The series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the NASCAR Cup Series, with Letarte providing expert analysis on playoff pressure, race strategy, and pivotal moments throughout the season.
Beyond broadcasting, Letarte is actively involved in esports. NASCAR has officially sanctioned a professional sim-racing series, and Letarte eSports currently fields two cars in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series, where elite competitors race on virtual recreations of real-world NASCAR tracks.
In 2018, Letarte became an author with the release of Leading the Way, a book that focuses on his four-year tenure as Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s crew chief and the leadership principles that helped rebuild the team’s confidence and return them to Victory Lane. Those same principles now drive his work as a keynote speaker for local, national, and international organizations.
